Wayne Christian

Wayne Christian was elected chief of the Splatsin First Nation in 1979 and held that title until 1987. He was also chairperson of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council. As chairperson he helped create the first community-controlled child welfare legislation in Canada.

Wayne M. Christian is of Shuswap/Okanagan ancestry. He is a proud father of seven children and four Grandchildren. Chief Christian was re-elected as Chief of Splats'in First Nation in December 2005. Christian was the Executive Director for the Community Health Associates of BC 2001 to 2005 and also a lecturer on leadership from a wellness perspective. He is an advocate for recognition of Aboriginal Title and Rights at the political and grassroots levels for the First Nations communities. Christian is currently Co-Chairperson of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council representing 10 of the 17 communities of the Secwepemc Nation with responsibilities in Child Welfare and Aboriginal Title and Rights.

Wayne also served as chairperson for the, "Constitutional Express", a key political force whereby First Nations across Canada boarded a train to meet with members of the Canadian parliament to enforce their rights for self-government. He served on the board of directors for the Round Lake Treatment Centre before becoming executive director. As executive director Wayne helped the Round Lake Treatment Centre become the first alcohol and drug treatment centre to recieve a 3–year CARF accreditation in B.C. To this day Wayne Christian is still involved in a variety of committees and boards, having recently worked on establishing Community Health Associates of BC. Presently he is chief of Spletsin Band and co-chair of Secwepemc Nation Tribal Council.
